I create my compositions in series, working on
three or more individual pieces at the same time so that I may
develop an idea and way of expressing it in variations, each
building on and linking to the others.
My preference is to work with papers and water-based
media, such as sumi ink, gouache, and liquid acrylic. These
materials allow me to build my compositions using spatial options
such as cut outs, 3-D forms, overlays, and texture or collage.
Within each series, I explore aspects of energy
in the physical world. Characteristics observed in natural forms,
such as rocks and fossils; ideas from written forms, such as
calligraphy and musical notation; and ideas from melodies and
rhythms heard while listening to music provide the inspiration
that motivates me to express this energy.
